Modern civilization puts so much pressure on a person that he is saved by all kinds of addictions, which brighten up the discomfort. This pushes it to constantly increase the consumption of goods and services, which leads to environmental degradation and the depletion of natural resources. What can stop a man? Awareness of the evils of unlimited consumption and the opportunity to fill your life with a connection to like-minded people.

The modern rhythm of life requires us to exert constant tension. We work hard, we are under constant stress, we are always in a hurry. Modern civilization has created such uncomfortable conditions for man that he is forced to resort to all kinds of addictions. And it’s not just alcoholism and drug addiction. It can be cravings for sweets and flour, soothing shopping, computer games and social media, as well as workaholism and physical or athletic activities.

The time has come to realize the aversion to reality that makes us dig ourselves a hole with our unrestrained consumption, writes Felix Marcard, co-founder of the international environmental association Black Elephant. Our desire for unlimited growth of the economy and consumption only leads to more harmful emissions into the atmosphere, pollution of water bodies and depletion of natural resources. We make whole mountains of waste and islands of plastic.

People believe they are governed by science and reason. In fact, scientists understand that the unrestrained growth of everything, and above all of our selfishness, must be limited. But they don’t know how to change a person’s consciousness and behavior. Civilization has turned us into spoiled children who cling to their toys. Today, the coronavirus showed that it’s time to grow up and take responsibility for our environment.

Once the pandemic is over, you can no longer go back to your old life. It is necessary to reduce our interference with nature and the unnecessary production of unnecessary goods and services. Who is forcing us to continuously buy? It seems to us that we buy voluntarily, but we are constantly pressured by public opinion, advertising and the media, which instill in us their values.

Scientists conducted a study on what factors influence feelings of happiness. The results showed that social connections came first, physical exercise second, and learning and skill acquisition third. Good social connections affect happiness even more than money!

Studies conducted by scientists at the University of Zurich showed the following: when patients feel lonely, their bodies produce the hormone cortisol, which causes anxiety, reduces concentration and impairs memory. Good social connections cause the secretion of the hormone oxytocin (love hormone), which is responsible for feelings of trust and security.

If values such as unity, mutual participation, and support are important in society, then a person will be able to reconsider previous values and take the first step toward other people. And help him in this environment of like-minded people who can give an example and help a person to fill the void and lead him to a life filled with interesting events and meaning.
